Allotment Site Maintenance over Autumn and Winter (2022-2023)

This is a list of site maintenance items to be carried out over the off-season.

Notes:

  • items in red indicate those tasks that require volunteer(s), principally burning the various prunings and dealing with fallen leaves;
  • items in black have volunteer(s) but the work has yet to be done;
  • while items in green have been completed.

Car Park and Outside the Gates

Prune the beech hedge in the car park (C)

Spot-spraying with weedkiller in September (C)

Prune shrubs in the bed outside the gates, on both our side and on the Village Hall side (BK)

Cut back creeping ground cover plants growing off the bed outside the gates (BK)

Other minor pruning in the car park .. elaeagnus etc (BK)

Fallen leaves to be cleared from the car park and outside the gates in December (BK)

Gulley adjacent to the seat is covered with stones from the car park area. They need to be removed (GN).

Pruning

Prune privet hedge in November (C)

Prune yew hedge along the boundary between the site and the Village Hall car park (GN)

Pruning around the seat, viz. overhanging shrubs and adjacent bamboo shoots (BK)

Pruning of the copse area (BK)

Ditch / Deer Fence

Deer fence line – spray with weedkiller in September (C)

Wood chip along the deer fence line to be topped up:

.. west end (LR);

.. central section (BK);

.. east end. Fallen oak leaves can be used here instead of wood chip (a.n.other)

Ditch – cut down brambles and prune holly and shrubs on the SW side of the site (LR)

Ditch – cut down brambles and prune holly and shrubs on the SE side of the site (BK)

Ditch – cut back any branches that are hanging low over the deer fence (BK)

Cut down nettles on the north side of the copse (BK)

Ditch – cut down holly seedlings and ivy, growing on the near side of the ditch (C).

Replace any rotten or broken deer fence posts in March 2023 (C)

Leaves

Remove fallen leaves, mainly in the SE and NW areas. Ideally, lay them out in the copse area where they can naturally rot down (a.n.others).

Other Items

Burn material from the various pruning exercises (PS, SK, BK and a.n.other)

Any required maintenance in and around the SW car parking area (LR)

Water tank on the corner of plots 7/7a to be emptied and cleaned (DV-S)

Other water tanks to be dredged to remove soil and other material (GN, SK and BK).
