Note for researchers
If you have looked at the contents of this site, you will see that I major on researching and writing potted histories on a range of subjects. For want of a better label I might be described as a “jack of all trades, master of none”.
I receive a reasonable number of queries from individuals who wish to trace the history of a relative, or a building, or a team. While I have been able to help some, it is more usual that I am unable to assist and I am limited to pointing them to other sources, usually archives.
In the UK, there is the National Archives at Kew, while each county will have its own set of archives, usually housed in the Record Office of that county. Increasing amounts of data in these archives can be accessed online, although a physical visit may be necessary. With regard to newspapers, the British Newspaper Archive is a very useful online resource which continues to grow. And there may be other archives that can help you, so it may well pay to investigate if there are any other relevant sources. For example, if your research relates to a specific sport then contact the ruling body of that sport at a national and/or local level and ask where their archives reside.
Hope that this helps. By all means ask me if you are struggling. I will help if I can.
Thanks.
